Friendly relations and inter-church ties between the Armenian and Assyrian peoples date back centuries

H.H. Karekin, the Second Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, hosted the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East Mar Awa III. Royel and the delegation he led at the Holy Etchmiadzin Mother See.

Welcoming the Assyrian Catholicos-Patriarch's visit to the Armenian spiritual center, His Holiness emphasized that friendly relations and inter-church ties between the Armenian and Assyrian peoples go back centuries. His Holiness noted that he had the opportunity to visit various Assyrian communities in Armenia and communicate with members of the communities, confirming that the latter preserve their language and cultural characteristics.

Thanking the Armenian Patriarch for his warm welcome, His Holiness Mar Awa III Catholicos-Patriarch emphasized that the purpose of his pastoral visit is to participate in the consecration of the Church of the Assyrian community of Armenia, as well as to deepen and strengthen the fraternal relations with the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church.

Referring to the Assyrian community of Armenia, the Catholicos-Patriarch noted that the Assyrians living in Armenia are loyal citizens of the country and, according to everything, serve the Motherland. In this regard, Patriarch-Catholic Mar Awa III informed that during the 44-day war, the representatives of the Assyrian community also took part in the defense of the motherland and, unfortunately, had martyrs.

The Catholicos of All Armenians touched upon the losses of the Assyrian community with deep sorrow, expressing confidence that the spiritual head's pastoral visit would bring great comfort to his followers. Referring to the situation in the region and Azerbaijan's continued aggression against Armenia, His Holiness expressed hope that the international community will also make active efforts to curb the neighboring country's aggressions and protect Armenian rights.

The Armenian Patriarch also spoke with satisfaction about the support the Sister Churches showed to the Armenian Church and the people during the 44-day Artsakh war. At the meeting, the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East wished peace and justice would be established in the region with the Lord's blessing.
