EU foreign affairs and security policy chief Josep Borrell accused Azerbaijan of shelling and occupying the sovereign territory of Armenia. The head of European diplomacy announced this at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
In his speech, he emphasized that the latest escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is not military operations in the disputed region but an invasion of Armenian territory.
"Azerbaijan shelled and occupied a part of the Armenian territory. In the regions that are in Armenia, they use artillery and drones. What is happening is extremely sad; about 300 soldiers were killed, and 207 were Armenians. There are several occupied regions, which is unacceptable. It is a disrespectful attitude towards the borders of a world-renowned country. The forces are so close that there is a danger of a new conflict," Borel said.
He also informed that the EU appealed to Azerbaijan, calling for an investigation into the footage of the killing of Armenian prisoners of war.
At the same time, he defended the energy agreement reached by the EU with Azerbaijan, stating that "the agreement does not work to the detriment of human rights or other democratic issues that have arisen in the country."
