US President Joe Biden announced that Washington would impose sanctions on Iranian officials over their response to protests in the country following the death of Kurdish woman Makhsa Amini.
"The United States stands in defense of Iranian women and children, as well as all Iranians who inspire peace with their courage," Biden said.
Mass protests in Iran began on September 17, after the death of 22-year-old Makhsa Amini.
