In a bid to protect children from online platforms, UK authorities are considering banning social media for minors, as they recently did in Australia.
Among the options being considered are stricter guidelines on mobile phone use in schools, the government has said.
Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Liz Kendall said the current laws were never meant to be the final word on regulation.
“That’s why I’m committed to taking further action,” she said.
To learn from Canberra’s experience, the British government plans to send ministers to Australia, which last month became the first country in the world to ban social media for children under 16.
Concerns about the adverse effects of smartphones and social media use are also being raised in other countries. Last week, Denmark announced plans to ban social media for children under 15.
