Trump threatens countries trading with Iran with tariffs

US President Donald Trump has threatened countries doing business with Iran with 25% tariffs.

“Effective immediately, any country doing business with Iran will pay a 25% tariff on all business with the United States of America,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

US importers pay the tariffs. Iran, a member of the OPEC oil-producing group, has been under severe US sanctions for years. China is the leading buyer of Iranian oil, while other major trading partners include Turkey, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and India.

“This order is final and irrevocable,” Trump added, without further details.

There is no official document on the White House website for this policy, nor is there information on its legal basis or application. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

The Chinese embassy in Washington criticized Trump’s approach, saying that China would take “all necessary measures” to protect its interests and opposed “any illegal unilateral sanctions and extended jurisdiction.”

“China’s position against the indiscriminate application of tariffs is consistent and clear. There are no winners in tariff and trade wars, and coercion and pressure cannot solve problems,” the Chinese embassy said in a statement on X.
