Maia Sandu has spoken out in favor of Moldova's unification with Romania

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has announced that she will vote in favor of unification with Romania in a referendum, aiming to protect the country’s democracy from Russian pressure.

In an interview with the British podcast “The Rest is Politics,” she noted that in today's world, it is increasingly difficult for small states like Moldova to maintain their sovereignty and resist Russian interference.

Although about 1.5 million Moldovans already hold Romanian citizenship, Sandu acknowledged that most of the population still does not support unification; polls show that only a third of citizens favor such a step.

In this context, the president emphasized that joining the European Union by 2030 remains the country's most realistic and top priority.
