European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa have arrived in Syria on an official visit. President Ahmed al-Sharaa received them.
The leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Syria and the European Union, focusing on reconstruction and enhancing stability in Syria and the region. The talks also focused on economic partnership, sustainable development, humanitarian issues, and migration in Europe.
Both sides stressed the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and expanding political dialogue to serve the interests of the Syrian people and support a balanced, constructive partnership with the EU.
“We are here today to demonstrate the EU’s continued support for Syria. There is still a long way to go, but you have already taken the first steps,” Antonio Costa wrote on his X page.
