US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have been at the center of a wave of incidents in recent days, with shootings in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Portland, Oregon.
The incidents, including the shooting of a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, have sparked thousands of protests in Minneapolis, as well as in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Phoenix, Orlando, and Columbus.
An ICE officer fatally shot and killed 37-year-old US citizen Renee Nicole Goody in Minneapolis on Wednesday. Federal authorities say she tried to ram a police car into officers and that officers acted in self-defense.
The Department of Homeland Security has called the incident a “domestic terrorism” incident and the shooting an act of self-defense.
Meanwhile, local authorities and protesters present a different version, claiming that the woman was engaged in community service.
On Thursday, US Border Patrol agents shot at a vehicle in Portland, injuring a man and a woman. The department claims that the driver used the car as a weapon and the shooting was in self-defense.
There are no reports of the condition of the victims, and the FBI is investigating the incident.
These incidents occurred against the backdrop of the deployment of 2,000 federal police officers in the Minneapolis area by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
US Vice President J.D. Vance called the Minneapolis incident a “tragedy” but defended the actions of the officer, claiming that the woman broke the law and posed a threat. Vance also criticized Democrats on social media, recalling the 2020 riots in Minneapolis after the murder of George Floyd. He accused law enforcement of failing to support him.
