US President Donald Trump said in an interview with The New York Times that “only time will tell” how long the United States will maintain control over Venezuela.

Asked whether that control would last three months, six months, a year, or more, Trump said, “I think much longer.”

Speaking of Venezuela, he said, “We will rebuild the country in a very profitable way. We will use the oil and take it. We will lower the price of oil and give Venezuela the money that it desperately needs.”

According to The New York Times, Trump also emphasized that the United States currently has a “perfect relationship” with the Venezuelan government led by interim President Delcy Rodríguez.

On Tuesday, Trump unveiled a plan to process and sell up to 50 million barrels of oil stored in Venezuela that a US blockade has held back. It is further evidence that Washington is coordinating with the Venezuelan government following the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro in a raid late last week.

“They are providing us with everything we need,” Trump said, referring to the Venezuelan government.
