These forces are designed to ensure Ukraine's security and prevent potential new aggression.

The country leaders then issued statements.

Keir Starmer

"It is important that we start the year like this: European and American allies side by side with Ukrainian President Zelensky for peace. We are closer to that goal than ever before. But of course, the most difficult tasks are still ahead."

Starmer also announced that in the event of a peace agreement, Great Britain and France will establish military bases in Ukraine to provide long-term support.

"This creates a legal basis within which British, French, and our partner forces can operate on Ukrainian territory, ensuring the security of air and sea space and rebuilding Ukraine's armed forces for the future."

Emmanuel Macron

Macron announced that a declaration on guarantees for Ukraine's security had been agreed at the meeting of the "coalition of the willing."

"These guarantees mean that Ukraine will not be forced to surrender and that any peace agreement will not be violated in the future."

Starmer added that the agreement was "part of our unwavering commitment to long-term support for Ukraine."
