The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland have urged US President Donald Trump to stop threatening to annex Greenland.

Trump said in an interview with The Atlantic that Greenland is necessary for defense.

“It makes no sense to talk about the need for the US to annex Greenland. The US has no right to annex any of the three countries of the Kingdom of Denmark,” said Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Her words came a day after the US arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and the president announced that Washington would rule the Latin American country.

The event raised concerns in Denmark that a similar situation could occur in Greenland.

Frederiksen reminded that Denmark is a member of NATO. “Therefore, I will strongly urge the United States to stop threatening a historically close ally and another country, another people, who have made it very clear that they are not for sale.”

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Friedrich Nielsen also said in a statement on Sunday, “When the President of the United States says ‘we need Greenland’ and links us to Venezuela and military intervention, that is not only wrong. It is disrespectful.”
