State Department urges immediate departure from Russia

The US State Department has renewed its “do not travel” warning for Russia, citing high risks of terrorism, unlawful detention, and arbitrary enforcement of local laws. The warning was issued as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, and, according to Washington, tensions are escalating.

The official statement notes that US authorities are limited in their ability to assist Americans in Russia, as the embassy and consulates have reduced their activities. US citizens are urged to leave Russia immediately. According to the warning, Russian authorities often interrogate and threaten US citizens without reason.

The document emphasizes that Americans have previously been detained on false charges, depriving them of a fair trial. At the same time, the State Department warns that in Russia, it should be assumed that all electronic communications and devices are monitored, so travelers are advised to reconsider whether they need to carry electronic devices.

The warning states that tourists who nevertheless decide to travel to Russia should be prepared for the possibility of indefinite detention. US citizens are advised to log out of all social media, avoid using them while in Russia, and address their legal and insurance matters in advance.

It also states that martial law remains in effect in the Russian regions bordering Ukraine, which allows authorities to restrict movement, detain foreigners, and apply emergency measures.
