Farmers protested outside the European Parliament building in Brussels.
The demonstration was organized by the Copa-Cogeca association in protest against reforms to the EU's Common Agricultural Policy and a trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc.
Protesters lit fires, blocked the square with tractors, and clashed with police. Farmers fear that the agreement with Mercosur will result in an influx of lower-priced agricultural products from Brazil and neighboring countries. In contrast, EU reforms will reduce subsidies.
