Serbia has canceled a major Trump Tower project in Belgrade amid protests and a criminal case. Construction of the $500 million hotel and apartment complex has been halted after a Serbian court indicted Culture Minister Nikola Selakovic on suspicion of abuse of power.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the country had “lost a unique investment” and threatened to hold accountable anyone involved in the project’s failure.
Meanwhile, Affinity Partners, owned by Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, said it was withdrawing from the project “out of respect for the position of the Serbian people and the Belgrade municipality.”
The project was to be built on a historic site that had previously been designated a protected cultural heritage site. Investigators have found that the removal of that status was accompanied by document falsification. Public pressure and law enforcement actions ultimately forced the project's abandonment.
