Bulgarian government resigns

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned today. The decision was made after continuous mass demonstrations in the country.

More than 100,000 people gathered in Sofia on Wednesday. The protesters demanded the government's resignation. They accuse the authorities of corruption.

Demonstrations were also organized in 25 other cities. Bulgarians even held demonstrations in Brussels, London, and New York.

The main target of the protesters was the oligarch Delyan Peevski, who has significant influence in the government. The United States and Britain have imposed sanctions against him for corruption.

The demonstrations began last week over the draft 2026 budget. The draft provided for tax increases. The government later abandoned this plan.

Bulgaria is due to join the eurozone on January 1.
