Kallas called Trump's statements a provocation

The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, told a hearing before the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee that the US criticism “maybe should be directed at Russia,” The Guardian reported.

She also stressed that the EU should be more assertive in acknowledging that the criticism is unfounded.

“I think this is being done to provoke us so that we will respond,” Kallas said.

“We know it’s ridiculous, it’s not true what they’re saying about the European Union. The criticism of freedoms here should be directed elsewhere. Maybe in Russia, where dissent is banned, where free media is banned, where political opposition is banned, where X or Twitter, as we know, is effectively banned,” Kallas said.

Earlier, the European Commission fined X (formerly Twitter) 120 million euros for violating the European Digital Services Act. After that, the US president said that Europe is heading in a terrible direction.
