US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in an interview with Fox News that the peaceful resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict depends solely on the political will of Russia and Ukraine.
“In the end, everything will depend on them, on Russia and Ukraine. If they decide not to end the war, it will continue. We will try to bring it to an end,” Rubio said.
The Secretary of State characterized the Ukrainian conflict as “the most illogical”, noting that “nobody wins in the traditional sense”.
At the same time, Rubio emphasized that the United States will continue to use all its potential to achieve a settlement. “We will do everything to make it happen,” he noted, referring to Washington’s efforts.
According to him, the United States is studying various solutions acceptable to both parties and is trying to “bring their positions closer together.”
Rubio added that there has been some progress, but it is “not enough yet.” “We are close, but we have not reached the goal yet. I hope that the situation will change,” he said.
The Secretary of State also emphasized that the previous administration’s lack of contacts with Russia was “illogical.”
“We need to talk to both sides. In the past, some people thought that we should only communicate with the Ukrainian side, but not with the Russian side. Now we are trying to bring the positions closer together. For this, a dialogue with both sides is necessary,” Rubio noted.
