EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has posted on her social media page about the discussions on the Middle Corridor and the creation of new trade routes between Europe and Asia.
Coss said that the CEO of the European Transport Authority told her at the Global Gateway Forum in October that he sends containers from China to Europe via Russia, and that if he is offered a reliable alternative, he will accept it.
“This is what we are doing. The Middle Corridor (or Trans-Caspian Corridor), a route of railways and ports connecting China, Central Asia, the South Caucasus, and the Black Sea with Europe, is becoming just that: a reliable alternative to trade routes that have become unreliable. Recent steps towards peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan have made this goal more realistic,” the EU Enlargement Commissioner wrote.
According to her, trade has quadrupled since 2022. With the right investments, it could triple by 2030.
“However, the investments will not come without coordination with our partners and agreement with the private sector. That is why I traveled to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where I discussed with Commissioner Joseph Sikela, Member States, as well as our partners in the Black Sea region and Central Asia, how to make this route faster, cheaper, and more reliable,” he stressed.
