The death toll from floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in three Southeast Asian countries has risen to more than 600 as of Sunday.
Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand have been hit by widespread devastation after a rare tropical storm slammed into the Strait of Malacca. The death toll has risen to 435 in Indonesia, 170 in Thailand, and three deaths in Malaysia.
Rescuers in the Southeast Asian countries were still struggling to reach many flooded areas on Sunday, even as water levels began to recede. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated across the three countries. Officials say more than 4 million people have been affected, with about 3 million in southern Thailand and 1.1 million in western Indonesia.
Separately, a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal killed 153 people in the island nation of Sri Lanka, authorities said. Another 191 people are missing, and more than half a million residents have been affected.
