Death toll in Indonesia rises to 500

More than 500 people have died in Indonesia due to severe flooding and landslides, Reuters reports. Massive flooding in North Sumatra began due to a rare tropical cyclone. About 400 residents are missing.

Homes have lost power, and thousands of buildings have been flooded. Many areas are cut off from civilization due to closed roads. Communications and electricity are out. Rescuers have used helicopters to deliver aid to hard-to-reach settlements.

The storm also affected the island of Sri Lanka: about 200 people have died, and more than half a million people have been affected.
