At least 33 people killed in Thailand floods

10 southern provinces in Thailand have been hit by record-breaking floods, killing at least 33 people. The business hub of Hat Yai has recorded its heaviest rainfall in 300 years (335 mm in a single day).

Of the more than 2 million people in the disaster zone, only 13,000 have been moved to shelters, while most remain cut off and helpless.

The Thai military, which is leading the relief effort, is preparing to deploy an aircraft carrier ("floating hospital") and 14 other small ships to evacuate people and deliver food.

The situation in neighboring countries is also dire: the death toll in Vietnam has reached 98, and more than 19,000 people have been evacuated in Malaysia.
