French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Benjamin Haddad, told Euroskop that the Georgian government’s crackdown on the opposition, civil society, and journalists is hindering the country’s European aspirations.
“This is regrettable, because the majority of the Georgian population supports the European path. This aspiration is strong and enjoys the support of France and other European countries. But what is happening since the 2024 parliamentary elections and, especially, in recent months, is further moving the country away from the European path,” he said.
He called on Georgian Dream to completely change its position, to start a constructive dialogue with the opposition.
“Work towards holding new parliamentary elections and releasing imprisoned political opponents, journalists, and civil society activists. Only in this case can the country return to its European aspirations. Otherwise, this process will come to a standstill,” he added.
