Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in dozens of Slovak cities, including the capital Bratislava’s Liberty Square, on Monday to protest Prime Minister Robert Fico and his pro-Russian policies.
The demonstrations coincided with the 36th anniversary of the 1989 revolution that ended communist rule in Czechoslovakia.
The main reason for the protests was that Fico’s government had canceled the day of the revolution as a public holiday this year, citing austerity measures.
Protests against Fico have been ongoing in Slovakia for months due to his pro-Russian stance, media pressure, and foreign policy changes.
