The Kremlin has allowed US bank Citibank to leave Russia in a bid to signal to the US that it is ready to repair ties after the cancellation of a summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Budapest, a former senior Russian official told the Financial Times (FT).
“These are difficult times. There is clearly an expectation that the current US administration, which is very business-oriented, may be receptive to this gesture,” the source explained.
He recalled that all major Western companies with businesses in Russia are “a kind of hostage.” In particular, they must obtain government permission to sell their businesses to exit the Russian market.
