US lifts sanctions against Rosatom nuclear power plant in Hungary

The United States has lifted sanctions imposed on the construction of new power units by the Russian state-owned Rosatom company at the Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced.

“It (the second phase of the Paks nuclear power plant) is already under construction, and they (the Hungarians) need to finish it. Since the project was developed and is being implemented by a Russian company, we want them to be able to finish it,” Rubio explained.

According to him, this is necessary for Hungary’s energy independence.

Sanctions against the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant with Russian participation were imposed in November 2024 by the previous US administration.
