Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that if the drought persists, authorities will be compelled to implement water rationing. If the situation deteriorates, the capital will be evacuated, according to Iranian media reports.
“If there is no rain by the end of the month of Azar (November 22-December 21), they will be forced to impose water rationing. If it does not rain after that, there will be no water left, and we will have to leave Tehran,” the Iranian president stressed.
He blamed the crisis on internal governance mistakes, not sanctions, and called for more efficient management of water and energy resources.
The president also criticized overstretched administrations, citing the presidential apparatus as an example.
“The presidential administration employs 4,000 people, although 400 would be enough. But everyone is paid a salary and requires expenses. Do we have real resources for this?” he said.
According to Iranian media, water levels in some dams in Tehran have dropped to single-digit percentages of capacity, and there has been virtually no rain since the beginning of autumn.
