Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk touched upon the import of Russian wheat to Armenia via Azerbaijan.
According to Overchuk, the direct railway connection between Russia and Armenia via Azerbaijan and Georgia is a “real contribution” to establishing peace in the South Caucasus and underlines the common aspiration for cooperation.
We welcome the launch of the railway connection between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia via the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgia. This is the first time since Armenia gained independence that a direct railway connection has been established between our countries. This event is a real, tangible contribution to establishing peace in the South Caucasus, a testament to our work in favor of regional stability and the economic development of all countries in the region,” he said.
Overchuk noted that the new corridor strengthens Russia’s transport links with the South Caucasus states, increases the accessibility of Armenia’s markets for goods from other member states of the Eurasian Economic Union, and also improves the accessibility of the EAEU markets for Armenian producers.
“It is symbolic that the first cargo on this route was Russian wheat, one of the most important symbols of life and creativity, which once again emphasizes the common aspiration for peace in the South Caucasus, for a transition from confrontation to cooperation,” Overchuk emphasized.
It should be noted that tonight, a train loaded with Russian wheat (comprising 15 wagons) arrived in Armenia, having passed through the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia.
