Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron. Pezeshkian said that the burden of rebuilding trust does not lie with Tehran, but with the United States and European powers, who must respect the rights of the Islamic Republic.
According to the Iranian president, while Iran has always welcomed dialogue and engagement, now it is the other side that must take the first step.
“It is not Iran that must prove its sincerity and build trust, but the United States and Europe that must earn the trust of the Islamic Republic of Iran by proving their sincerity,” he said.
The phone call took place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear program (JCPOA), from which the United States unilaterally withdrew. Pezeshkian has repeatedly stated Tehran’s willingness to negotiate, but only on equal terms and without threats.
