The complex humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues

Sudan’s two-year civil war has created one of the most complex humanitarian crises of the 21st century. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the warring parties to end “this nightmare of violence immediately.”

The conflict between the Sudanese government army and the Rapid Response Force (RSF) has killed more than 150,000 people and displaced 14 million. Prosecutors for the International Criminal Court are gathering evidence of mass killings, rapes, and other crimes in the town of El Fasher.

The RSF entered the town of El Fasher in North Darfur last week, and the situation is worsening by the day. Hundreds of thousands of civilians remain under siege, dying from hunger, disease, and violence. Since the fall of the town, the RSF controls all five state capitals in Darfur.

The United States has been attempting since September to persuade the parties to accept a peace plan, which includes a three-month humanitarian pause followed by a nine-month transition to a civilian government. The Sudanese ambassador to the United Kingdom has demanded that the RSF be designated a terrorist organization and that arms sales to the United Arab Emirates be banned.
