Death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines rises to 66

Typhoon Kalmaegi has killed at least 66 people in the Philippines, the country's disaster agency said. Another 26 people are missing.

Six of the dead were killed when a military helicopter crashed while surveying the affected areas. The others were killed by flooding, falling trees, and collapsed buildings. More than 430,000 people were forced to flee their homes.

The storm hit 24 provinces on the country's largest islands, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Power outages have been reported in many areas, and dozens of flights have been canceled.

The storm has weakened, but its winds are still packing maximum sustained winds of 180 kilometers per hour, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
