Israeli police have arrested and detained the country’s military prosecutor-general, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmin, over the leak of a video of Israeli soldiers abusing a Palestinian detainee.
Tomer-Yerushalmin has admitted to authorizing the leak of the video and later lied to Israel’s highest court in an attempt to cover up her actions.
In her resignation letter, which she submitted last week, the prosecutor said the purpose of releasing the video was to “neutralize attacks on military investigators and prosecutors.”
Her arrest has raised serious questions in Israel about the rule of law, as well as about the abuses and accountability for Palestinians.
According to reports, Tomer-Yerushalmin released the video in August 2024 amid protests over the military's treatment of Palestinian detainees, stating that it was "an attempt to counter false propaganda being spread against the army's law enforcement agencies."
