One person has died after a tower collapsed in the historic center of Rome.
A section of the 29-meter-high medieval Torre dei Conti, located near the Colosseum and next to the Roman Forum, collapsed. Although a worker was rescued, he died in the hospital. The deceased worker is reported to be Romanian.
The man was pulled out at 11:00 p.m. local time, 11 hours after the section of the Conti Tower, located on the edge of the Roman Forum, collapsed.
The man was in critical condition and went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance.
The other worker, also a Romanian citizen, was pulled out almost immediately after the collapse and hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Romania's Foreign Ministry confirmed the nationalities of the victims.
The tower has been closed to visitors for many years while restoration work is underway.
