German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Syrian refugees in the country should now return to their homeland.
“The civil war in Syria is over. There is absolutely no reason to grant asylum in Germany now so that we can start deportations,” he said.
Merz said he expected a significant number of refugees to return voluntarily and participate in reconstruction efforts.
“Those who refuse to return from Germany could be deported in the future,” he added.
