US President Donald Trump met with Japan's first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi. During the meeting in Tokyo, Trump praised the newly elected prime minister for her work in accelerating the buildup of military power and for signing trade and key minerals agreements.
Takaichi, a golf buddy and close ally of Trump's late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, announced her candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize.
He is also expected to offer a package of US investments as part of a $550 billion deal agreed to this year, including shipbuilding and increased purchases of American soybeans, natural gas, and pickup trucks, Reuters reported.
"That's a firm handshake," Trump said as they posed for a photo in the courtyard of Akasaka Palace in central Tokyo.
"From what I know from Shinzo and others, you're going to be one of the great prime ministers. "I also want to congratulate you on becoming the first female prime minister. This is a big event," Trump told Takaichi.
During the meeting, Takaichi presented Trump with Abe's golf clubs, a golf bag signed by Hideki Matsuyama, a winner of major Japanese tournaments, and a gold-leaf golf ball.
