A state of emergency was declared in the Caribbean on October 28. Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, is set to hit Jamaica, becoming the most powerful storm to hit the island in 174 years.
According to weather forecasters, the storm will pass through the island, from St. Elizabeth in the south to St. Ann in the north. The government has warned of devastating consequences, noting that recovery could take days.
Landslides, fallen trees, and power outages have already been recorded. Deadly waves of up to 4 meters are expected on the southern coast.
Before reaching Jamaica, the storm had already claimed at least 7 lives.
