US prepares new sanctions against Russia

The United States has prepared a new draft of sanctions against Russia and will apply them if Moscow does not stop the conflict in Ukraine, Reuters reports, citing an unnamed American official and sources.

“The administration of US President Donald Trump has prepared additional sanctions that could be applied to key sectors of the Russian economy if Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to delay the cessation of Moscow’s military operations in Ukraine. Some of the additional sanctions will target Russia’s banking sector and infrastructure used for oil shipments,” the website writes.

According to the source, Trump is likely to wait several weeks to assess Russia’s reaction when the sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil were announced on Wednesday. According to Reuters, Trump is ready to support the sanctions package but will most likely not implement them in October.

“Ukrainian officials proposed new sanctions to the United States last week. In particular, measures have been proposed to disconnect all Russian banks from the dollar settlement system through American partners,” the article says.
