Merz expects the US to make an exception for Rosneft's German companies

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he expects the US to make an exception for Rosneft's German subsidiaries, Reuters reported.

The companies are Rosneft Deutschland and RN Refining & Marketing, both of which are state-owned.

The German Ministry of Economics and Energy said the US sanctions should not affect Rosneft's German business, as it is state-owned. At the same time, Reuters reports that several banks have already told the US that sanctions could hinder their transactions.

Rosneft Deutschland accounts for about 12% of Germany's oil refining capacity. The company has stakes in three major German refineries: PCK Schwedt in Schwedt, Miro in Karlsruhe, and Bayernoil in Fauburg-Danube.

On October 22, the United States imposed sanctions on Rosneft, Lukoil, and their group of companies. In total, 28 different Rosneft companies and six Lukoil companies were included in the list.
