Trump breaks shutdown record

US President Donald Trump has surpassed the record for the most government shutdowns set by former President Jimmy Carter, having overseen the most cumulative days of government shutdowns in his two terms.

To date, Trump has led the country through 57 days of government shutdowns. 36 of those have occurred in his first term.

Carter led the country through five shutdowns, totaling 56 days.

Former President Clinton had the third-longest tenure, with two shutdowns lasting 26 days each.

The US government shutdown began on October 1 after Congress failed to reach a deal on September 30.
