The United Kingdom's King Charles III and Pope Leo XIV prayed together in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel today. It was the first joint Mass attended by an English monarch and a Catholic pontiff since Henry VIII left Rome in 1534.
King Charles sat to the pope's left at the altar as Leo and Anglican Archbishop Stephen Cottrell led the service, which was attended by the Sistine Chapel choir and two royal choirs.
Although King Charles has met with the last three popes, and Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have visited the UK, their previous meetings have never included joint prayers.
