French President Emmanuel Macron met with former President Nicolas Sarkozy at the Elysee Palace on Friday, as his five-year sentence begins on October 21 in the Santé prison in Paris.
According to Le Figaro, the meeting lasted about an hour. Macron expressed his support for the former president, although he did not publicly comment on the court's decision.
Sarkozy was convicted on September 25, 2025, in the Libyan financing of the 2007 election campaign.
According to sources, Macron noted during the meeting that France protects sitting presidents, but that such an immunity procedure does not exist for former leaders. At the same time, Sarkozy's son, Louis, called for a demonstration in support of his father on October 21.
