German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to the United States has shown the need for European assistance to Ukraine.
N-TV quoted the German prime minister's statement.
Merz noted that after the talks between Zelensky and Trump, he had a long conversation with the Ukrainian president.
"The visit did not go as Zelensky had hoped. I think I can say that here," he added.
According to the chancellor, this makes European assistance even more important, since the war can only be ended thanks to Ukraine's military strength. He announced that he would work to support Ukraine "financially, politically and, of course, militarily."
He stressed that capitulation is not an option for Ukraine, because in that case, Russia will attack the following European country.
On October 17, Zelensky traveled to the White House at the invitation of Donald Trump.
