Montenegro, which is seeking to join the European Union, will soon align its visa regime with EU law.
“We are trying to delay the introduction of visas as long as possible to preserve our tourism industry,” the country’s President Jakov Milatovic told Politico.
Milatovic added that he is particularly concerned about the influx of Russian money into the country.
Montenegro applied for EU membership in 2008. Since then, the country has met seven of the 33 conditions for joining the EU and plans to meet five more by the end of this year.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that Montenegro could join the EU as early as 2028.
