Former Trump adviser indicted

Former Trump adviser John Bolton will stand trial on charges of illegally transmitting classified information. He served as the US President's national security adviser during Trump's first presidency.

Bolton became the third opponent of the US president to be indicted in recent weeks, after former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. If convicted, Bolton faces a lengthy prison sentence.

In August, FBI agents searched the politician's home and office.

Bolton denies the charges. His lawyer said Bolton handled the documents properly. He is expected to be formally surrendered to authorities on Friday.

Prosecutors, in particular, accuse him of illegally transmitting top-secret defense information through personal email and other messaging services. The indictment is 26 pages long.

"These documents revealed intelligence about future attacks, foreign adversaries, and foreign policy relationships," the department said in a document.

The indictment alleges that John Bolton sent classified documents by email to "two unauthorized individuals." Their names were not disclosed, but US media reported that they may have been his wife and daughter.
