Syrian President to visit Moscow for the first time today

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday, Syria's state news agency SANA reported.

This is the Syrian leader's first visit to Russia since opposition forces led by Shaaraa overthrew President Bashar al-Assad last year.

The two leaders will discuss regional and international developments and ways of cooperation between Syria and Russia, SANA reported, citing the Syrian presidential press service.

Earlier, pro-government Syrian television and a source familiar with the situation said on Tuesday that he intends to hold talks on the continuation of the Russian naval base in Tartus and the Russian air base in Hmeimim, an official Syrian source said.

Reuters also reported that he will formally demand the extradition of Russia's ally, Assad, to stand trial for alleged crimes against Syrians, the source added.
