Russia has proposed declaring a local ceasefire

By the end of this week, work may begin on restoring external power supply to the Zaporozhye NPP, which was seized in 2022 and has been operating on emergency diesel generators for three weeks, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said.

According to him, two damaged power lines, Dneprovskaya and Feroslavnaya-1, need to be restored.

"For this to become a reality, it is necessary to agree on a local ceasefire in the areas where repair work will be carried out," Ulyanov said. He noted that the Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is acting as a mediator between representatives of Russia and Ukraine in this matter.

The Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River, near the city of Energodar. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, with six power units, each with a capacity of one gigawatt. Russia captured the atomic power plant in the first days of the large-scale invasion of 2022. In September of the same year, generation at the power units was stopped, and since April 2024, they have been in cold shutdown mode. Moreover, electricity is needed to cool the plant's fuel.
