France’s new Prime Minister, Sebastien Le Corneille, has summoned his ministers to discuss the country’s 2026 budget, which will be debated in parliament over the next 70 days.
The discussions have already begun in a tense atmosphere. The right-wing National Rally party and the far-left France Undefeated have submitted no-confidence motions, which will be debated on Thursday.
The National Rally is calling for early parliamentary elections, while France Undefeated is demanding that Macron resign.
While neither party alone has enough seats to topple Le Corneille’s government, the danger increases if socialists and environmentalists join them.
More than a year and a half ago, Macron’s government faced mass protests over a pension reform that sparked nationwide discontent. The reform raises the retirement age from 62 to 64. It was adopted without a parliamentary vote, using a special constitutional mechanism.
