Peru's parliament impeaches the president

Peru's parliament has voted to remove President Dina Boluarte from office. The reason for the dismissal is the increase in crime in the country, which has caused great dissatisfaction among the people.

38-year-old lawyer José Geri, the head of parliament, replaced Boluarte.

Deputies asked Boluarte to appear before parliament to give explanations, but she did not. After that, after midnight, they voted, and 124 deputies voted in favor of her dismissal. There were no votes against.

These events occurred after shootings at a concert in the capital, which further exacerbated public dissatisfaction with the lack of fight against crime. Unlike the eight previous unsuccessful attempts to remove Boluarte, this time all factions in parliament supported the decision.

Boluarte, who was the first female president of Peru, took power in December 2022 after the dismissal of former President Pedro Castillo. After the vote, he gave a televised speech touting his government's achievements. "I wasn't thinking about myself, I was thinking about the Peruvian people," he said. However, the speech was interrupted when Geri's inauguration began. Geri will serve as interim president until July 28, 2026.
