French president to appoint new prime minister

French President Emmanuel Macron will name a new prime minister within the next 48 hours, the Elysee Palace said, dismissing talk of snap elections.

Former Prime Minister Sebastien Le Corneille, who unexpectedly resigned on Monday after less than a month in office, said the majority in parliament was against snap elections and was ready to make compromises to secure the formation of a new government.

"There is a majority in parliament that wants to avoid new elections," he told French television.

Le Corneille said he was no longer running for prime minister, but his efforts had helped ease the political crisis. He said no party had an absolute majority in the National Assembly, but there was a majority that rejected snap elections.

Le Corneille said Macron's controversial pension reform remained a central sticking point in talks to form a new government. "Opinions differ. "Some demand a suspension, some a cancellation, others accept its financial consequences," he noted.

According to political analysts, the deepening domestic political crisis in France could be eased by the formation of a new government if the parties can reach a compromise.
