A crowd of about 500 people attacked the motorcade of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa. The incident occurred when the head of state was traveling to the province of Canar. Reuters reports this.
Bullet holes were found on the head of state's car, but Noboa was not injured. Police have arrested five people.
The presidential administration said the attackers acted with "radical views."
Those arrested are expected to be charged with terrorism and attempted murder.
Protests in Ecuador have been ongoing since mid-September. The organizers of the demonstrations are an indigenous peoples' organization called CONAIE. The rallies are a response to the president's decision to cancel subsidies for diesel fuel.
Noboa had earlier stated that the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua group was behind the protests.
