Former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe (2017-2020), one of Emmanuel Macron’s key centrist allies, has called for early presidential elections.
Speaking on RTL radio on Tuesday morning, Philippe, who is also a candidate in the 2027 presidential race, urged Macron to appoint a new prime minister, approve the budget, and then call early presidential elections.
He warned of the risk of “the collapse of the state.”
A presidential election seems unlikely. Macron has repeatedly stated that he will not run for re-election until 2027, but the ongoing political crisis is adding to the uncertainty.
